A Person of Interest
At a hastily put together news conference today, the still new Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters that a "person of interest" had been detained regarding his suspected involvement in the shooting death last Wednesday in Midtown Manhattan of Brian Thompson, CEO of United Healthcare. Commissioner Tisch identified the alleged gunman as Luigi Mangione, age 26, whose last known address was in Honolulu, and announced that he had been arrested in Altoona, PA (at a local McDonald's) on "firearms charges" that included weapons possession and falsely claiming an illegal identity. Said Tisch: "Responding officers questioned the suspect who was acting suspiciously and was carrying multiple fraudulent IDs as well as a U.S. passport." He was also carrying a firearm with a "suppressor consistent with the weapon used in the murder of Brian Thompson, and a manifesto against healthcare companies," said the NYPD Commissioner. The handwritten manifesto "speaks to both his motivation and his mindset," Tisch went on to say, although she did not reveal exactly what the manifesto contains. Commissioner Tisch articulately explained "that a McDonald's employee recognized the suspect - from the well circulated NYPD photo postings of the alleged assailant - and then called local police".

Also speaking at the press conference was NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny, who said that his office believes that Mangione used a so-called "ghost gun" that the suspect may have constructed from a 3D printer. Kenny also referenced the aforementioned manifesto in saying that Mangione seems to hold "some ill will toward corporate America." NYPD detectives are now en route to Pennsylvania to further interview the suspect. Commissioner Tisch praised the NYPD "for the tireless work of the greatest detectives in the world, and the strong relationships we have on every level with other local, state and federal law enforcement partners."
An arraignment hearing is scheduled for December, 26th.
